  • What type of training does a psychiatrist have?
It begins with a medical degree, which means I completed four years of medical school after having already completed an undergraduate degree. After medical school, all doctors complete an intensive training program of varying lengths called residency. For psychiatrists, this is an additional four years and constitutes over 16,000 hours of clinical work. In addition to direct patient care, residency also includes additional study, presentations and exams. Residency training includes direct inpatient and outpatient care, and training in both psychotherapy and prescribing medication.  After residency I completed an additional two year training program through the Denver Psychoanalytic Institute in psychodynamic psychotherapy. This provided over 700 additional training hours.
Trying to understand the differences in training and professional degrees can be very confusing. The Tennessee Medical Association provides a more in depth explanation here.
