Types of TreatmentIn general, the types of treatment I provide are:
Therapy Therapy and Medication In general, I do not provide medication management alone. Medications can be very helpful, but are not always a necessary part of treatment. The combination of medication and therapy can be particularly helpful. As a psychiatrist who is trained and experienced in both modalities, I can streamline your treatment and make more efficient use of your time. |
Therapy

The purpose of therapy is not only to alleviate symptoms and/or distress, but to improve emotional health. This can mean a range of things, depending on the person. It can include an increased flexibility of thought and behavior. This allows one to utilize more options for facing life's challenges. It may include increasing feelings of self-worth and increased satisfaction with relationships. It could also be used to enhance one's ability to tolerate a greater range of emotions.
Ways in which we will work to accomplish these goals can include self reflection, self expression of emotions (putting feelings into words), identifying recurring themes and patterns of thought or behaviors, identifying conflicting emotions which may lead to distress, and understanding the ways in which the past affects our present experience.
It is important to be able to identify and describe what one is thinking and feeling in order to make changes.

Medications
Medications regulate naturally occurring chemicals in your body. This process works to alleviate symptoms. The purpose of taking medications is not to eliminate feelings, but medications can decrease the intensity of some emotions. This can allow one to focus on other important areas of one’s life. For example, medications may decrease the intensity of anxiety or worries, which allows one to be more engaged in other areas of one’s life and more effectively utilize coping strategies .
Medications and Therapy
Both research and experience tells us that the combination of medication and therapy can be especially helpful. In some cases, medication may be necessary to alleviate symptoms in order to be able fully participate in a therapeutic process.
What is Psychotherapy?
Psychotherapy is also often referred to as “talk therapy.” It is place in which you can confidentially discuss problems you may have. By discussing concerns in an objective and nonjudgemental environment, one can feel relief through the experience of feeling understood and through an increased knowledge of oneself. Although talking about your concerns may bring up some difficult feelings, in a controlled and supportive environment this can ultimately help these feelings subside.
Discussing feelings and experiences with an objective professional can be a powerful experience. I find that the ability for self reflection is an important part of making changes. As it is difficult to change things that you are unable identify, putting a name to your thoughts, feelings and experiences is an important part of the process of making changes in one's life.
There are many different types of therapy as well as types of professionals who practice some form of therapy. In addition to practicing different types of therapies, each practitioner generally has a different style and personality. I believe that therapy should feel like a collaborative exploration between you and the therapist. Therapy can be a challenging process, and it is important for you to feel comfortable with your therapist.
